But far beyond that,
this project is vital to the identity and future of Eugene.
Eugene has long had extensive parkland along the river
that is well -used and cherished by the community—but
I'd love to see that parkland complemented by a high-
quality urban gathering place at the river. This special
site also offers an opportunity to create the sort of
relatively dense walkable neighborhood where people
can live, socialize, perhaps work, and find recreation all
within a few minute's walk. This sort of opportunity is
currently uncommon in Eugene, but is a key component
of our plans for a sustainable future as the city grows.
Finally, this riverside location is the ideal location for
Eugene to demonstrate, both to those who live here and
to visitors, what it Eugene's high quality of life, with
social, cultural and natural amenities, is all about. At the
EWEB site, Eugene can re -discover what drew many of
us to this community in the first place.
No Suoolemental Answers
As a neighbor, I understand the amenities and concerns
that are important when living in a multi -family urban
complex near the river—from train noise and traffic to
personal safety. I'm very familiar with issues affecting
bicycle/pedestrian travel through the area. I recognize the
importance of this site for sustainability and achieving the
values of Envision Eugene: compact, walkable
development, a variety of housing types, protecting the
natural environment of the river, and allowing opportunities
for Eugene to find its own creative expression in this site at
the heart of our community. I also look forward to listening
to and learning from others involved in the project, and to
others in the community who care deeply about it.
Page 112 of 112 y C7
