Eugene and <br />Springfield increased in population <br />at a higher annual average rate than <br />Lane County but Eugene's annual <br />population increase (2.2%) was at a <br />slightly higher rate than Springfield's <br />(1.8%). Portland State University <br />has estimated the Eugene- <br />Springfield population will continue <br />to increase through 2003, but at a <br />lower percentage than previous <br />years. <br /> <br />Hispanic Ethnicity and Minority <br />According to the 2000 Census, <br />race data is not directly <br />comparable with data from 1990 <br />and previous censuses since <br />new guidelines allowed <br />respondents to report as many <br />race categories as were <br />necessary to identify themselves <br />on the 2000 questionnaire. In <br />addition, the new guidelines <br />revised some of the racial <br />categories used in the 1990 <br />census. While the total population in Lane County grew by 14.0% between 1990 and <br />2000, the minority population more than doubled. Data shows the minority population <br />increased by 126.6%. <br /> <br />The Eugene-Springfield MSA showed over a 100.0% increase from 1990 to 2000 in <br />Other, Non-Hispanic races, and individuals with Hispanic ethnicity. Springfield's Black <br />and Non-Hispanic populations have increased steadily since 1980 with a rate of change <br />of 57.0% and in Eugene this population has increased with a rate of change of 87.0%. <br /> <br />23 <br /> <br /> <br />
