The average household size of owner-occupied units in Springfield is greater than <br />Eugene, with an average of 2.57 persons per household. Renter-occupied housing, <br />which makes up 46.0% of all occupied housing in Springfield, according to the Census <br />2000, has an average household size of 2.25 persons. This number is greater than <br />Eugene, where rental housing takes up 48.0% of all occupied housing units with an <br />average of 2.05 persons per rental housing unit. <br /> <br />Overall, for both Eugene and <br />Springfield, there are more <br />owner-occupied housing <br />units with larger average <br />household sizes than renter- <br />occupied housing units, <br />according to the Census <br />2000. In the 1990 Census, <br />Eugene had 45,274 occupied <br />housing units, of which <br />50.7% or 23,483 were <br />owner-occupied, and 49.3% <br />or 22,791 that were renter- <br />occupied. In Springfield, there was an increase of 18.0% in occupied housing <br />units. <br /> <br />From the 1990 Census, data shows that Eugene and Springfield had an average of 2.55 <br />and 2.62 people per owner-occupied housing unit, with 2.05 and 2.47 people per renter- <br />occupied housing unit. The average household size of owner-occupied units in Eugene <br />and Springfield has declined since 1990. Springfield did experience an increase in the <br />average household size of renter-occupied housing units while Eugene's remained the <br />same. <br /> <br />The number of vacant units within the Eugene-Springfield area increased from 1990 to <br />2000 by 45.77%. In 2000, these vacant units represented 4.88% of all housing units for <br />both communities. According to the S©CDS Census data in Eugene, the number of <br />vacant units as a percent of all occupied units increased from 1990 to 2000 from 3.4% to <br />5.1% and within Springfield, the number of vacant units increased from 3.5% to 4.3% of <br />all occupied housing units. <br /> <br />29 <br /> <br /> <br />
