<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />Commission respect trees, he stated that he has spent many of the past 12 years <br />defending trees. He said 6th and 7th Avenues are fed into by several streets <br />and it can be only viewed as the major east/west arterial for the city. He said <br />people must choose between a future freeway project and a light rail project in <br />ten years. He challenged people to become involved in the future transporation <br />system process. He said the Sierra Club has a motto of "not blind opposition to <br />progress, but opposition to blind progress." Mr. Ball felt that the project <br />passes that test and stated that he would support the motion. <br /> <br />Councilor Holmer, addressing the topic of trees, stating the Design Review <br />Committee would preserve the maximum consistent with the economic health of the <br />commmunity. In regard to councilors listening to the public, he said the <br />council has listened carefully and he has listened for guidance and wisdom. <br />He said he was concerned when told to base his decision on the number of people <br />speaking for or against the issue. He responded that several witnesses in <br />support of the project represented substantial groups such as the League of <br />Women Voters. As a councilor, he said he has considered the testimony presented <br />and the information provided from other sources and will be content with his <br />vote. <br /> <br />Mayor Keller stated that the role of the public has changed the direction of the <br />project. Remembering the major road projects in the past 11 years, he said that <br />none of the decisions have been easy, but he felt that the decisions made were <br />in the best interest of the city. He concurred that the present project is part <br />of an overall plan and stressed that the Land Use Plan in place is performing <br />good work for the residents of Eugene.
