C. INSITE 184 International Business Site Conference &
Exposition ~
e Mr. Obie reported on the INSITE 184 trade show he attended recently in the
San Francisco Bay area recently. The Oregon Department of Economic
Development had organized the state effort well, he said. The Oregon
delegation was unified. The conference was not very successful if measured by
the number of clients who attended, but the activities organized by the
Governor1s office were good. Herb Dwight, president of Spectra Physics,
spoke at one of the functions and did an excellent job of stating the
opportunities in Eugene.
Mr. Obie said the Eugene/Springfield delegation thought the printed material
about the state overlooked this area.
Mr. Obie discussed the crowded conditions in and around San Jose. However,
85,000 new jobs will be created there in 1985. He estimated there is as much
industrial space under construction in that area as there is total industrial
space in the Eugene/Springfield area. He proposed a partnership with the
decision-makers who could move companies to Eugene, but he emphasized that
the decision-makers do not know what Eugene has to offer. A sophisticated
approach is needed. That area offers the greatest opportunity for
recruitment.
Discussing Japanese companies, Mr. Obie said Eugene was recommended to the
company that recently decided to build two plants in the Portland area. The
flight time from Japan and the impact of a very large plant were factors in
the decision. Probably 1000 companies or divisions will be created by the
e Japanese in the United States in the next three years. Many are support
companies.
Mr. Ball pointed out only one airline has flights from Eugene to San
Francisco. Mr. Obie said flights are needed which will enable people to come
to Eugene from San Francisco in the morning and return in the evening. He
has meetings scheduled soon with the Airport Commission and the Chamber of
Commerce aviation committee. Recruitment of airlines is needed.
D.
