<br />. <br /> <br />January 3, 1985 <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />M E M 0 RAN 0 U M <br /> <br />TO: Mayor & City Council <br /> <br />FROM: Barbara Bellamy, Public Information Director <br /> <br />SUBJECT: Follow-up to Passag~ of Ballot Measure #51 <br /> <br />Ballot Measure #51, which calls for a halt to U.S. military aid to Central <br />America, was approved by Eugene voters in the November general election. <br />The measure instructs the City Council to send a copy of the ballot measure <br />to specified federal officials and to publicize the measure lito the people <br />and the press of Oregon". <br /> <br />To fulfill the requirements of the ballot measure, legal staff recommends <br />that the Council pass a motion directing the city manager to: <br /> <br />1) transmit on behalf of the Council a copy of Ballot Measure #51 to <br />the public officials named therein; and <br /> <br />2) to disseminate a news .release and copy of the ballot measure <br />to statewide news media organizations. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />Pam Wooddell, spokesperson for the petitioners who placed the measure <br />on the ballot, favors these two actions. In addition, she requests that <br />the Council plan and implement a public reading of the ballot measure <br />at the next Monday City Council meeting ar.d that local news media be <br />invited to attend. <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />\ <br />
