Summary of key demographic trends <br />Eugene's population is growing older. <br />• Between 2000 and 2011, the following changes occurred: <br />• The share of the population aged 45 to 64 increased by more <br />than 4,740 people (16%). <br />The share of the population aged 65 and older increased by <br />more than 4,369 people (26%). <br />The share of the population aged 5 to 17 decreased by about <br />1,000 people (-6%). <br />The population is forecast to continue to age. <br />In Lane County, the State forecasts that the population will <br />continue to get older between 2010 and 2040. The share of <br />population in people aged 60 and older is forecast to increase from <br />17% of the population in 2000 to 27% of the population in 2040. The <br />share of population 29 years and younger is forecast to decrease <br />from 42% in 2000 to 36% in 2040. <br />Eugene has a larger share of college -aged people than Lane County as a <br />whole. <br />Eugene has a greater proportion of its population aged 20-29 years <br />than County or State averages. <br />• Eugene has fewer households with children under 18 years (24%) <br />than nearby cities, including Springfield (33%), Coburg (33%), <br />Cottage Grove (32%), Creswell (37%), Junction City (36%), and <br />Veneta (36%). <br />Eugene has a smaller share of residents over the age of 65 (13%) <br />compared with some communities in Lane County, notably <br />Oakridge and Cottage Grove. <br />Eugene's households are generally smaller. <br />• Eugene had fewer people per household, with an average <br />household size of 2.24 people, compared to the County average of <br />2.35 and State average of 2.47 people per household. <br />• Eugene had more one and two person households (69%), compared <br />to the State (64%) and Lane County (67%). <br />• Eugene had a larger share of 1 -person households (34%) than the <br />State (27%) or County (29%). <br />Part 11 — Eugene Housing Needs Analysis ECONorthwest Page 73 <br />
