e

e

e

Mr. Holmer said that CCED feels that special events are a marketing tool and
that through cultivation of event marketing, CCED hopes to position and
reinforce Eugene's cultural identity.

In order to achieve its mission, CCED has identified a list of objectives
which should be pursued by the City. These include:

Raising Eugene's profile among western American cities;
Providing opportunities for citizen access to and enjoyment of
cultural, entertainment, and athletic events;
Positioning Eugene as a regional cultural, entertainment, and
athletic center;
Reinforcing a multiple-strategies approach to economic development;
and
Supporting and enhancing the convention and tourism industry in
Eugene.

Mr. Holmer circulated a copy of the draft strategic plan which CCED has
instituted to aid in meeting its goals. He emphasized the importance of
coordinating Eugene1s special events and suggested that such coordination
might be best achieved through a special event's tourism and marketing
committee. CCED1s next step is to implement an action plan for strategic
plan implementation which will be brought before the council in the future.

The meeting adjourned at 1:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,

~~,f~''-'

Micheal Gleason
City Manager

(Recorded by Traci Northman)
mncc 041890

MINUTES--Eugene City Council

April 18, 1990

Page 7
