He urged annexation to <br />bring light industry to Eugene. <br /> <br />Allen Mann, 317 S.W. A1 der, Portland, spoke as a represen- <br />tative of the Department of Economic Development, State of <br />Oregon. He indicated that there was some misunderstanding <br />as to the number of people imported to an area when an industry <br />like Data General would set up its building site and industry. <br />He cited a letter from Hewlett-Packard indicating that out of <br />600 employees, only 200 had been imported out of the Corvallis <br />area. He sai d that Hew1 ett- Packard expected by 1986 to have <br />a total employment of 3,000 with only 15 to 20 percent of <br />that number being transferred in from out of the area. He <br />urged passage of the annexation and rezoning. <br /> <br />B. M. Estes, 6730 liE" Street, Springfield, concurred with <br />the testimony that had been given, and urged passage of the <br />annexation and rezoning. <br /> <br />Kenneth Pelikan, 2134 Fairmount Boulevard, spoke in favor of <br />the annexation and rezoning issue. As student body president <br />at Lane Community College, he said that bringing in light <br />industry to the area woul d impact LCC and that there woul d <br />be a variety of instructional programs and expansion of the <br />electronic program. He said that the students at LCC sup- <br />ported clean industry coming to the area. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />Lee Robinson spoke as a citizen of the area. He said that he <br />wondered if there was a need to annex the areas around Eugene <br />and a need for a new tax base. He said there was a need for <br />some industrial growth, and wondered if this could not occur <br />within the city limits without expanding the agricultural land <br />in the outlying areas. He asked Mayor Keller if Data General <br />had actually said it would come to Eugene and make their site <br />here. <br /> <br />Sandra Bishop, 1190 West Broadway, asked Council to recognize <br />the necessity of planning for a long-term need. She indicated <br />she did not see the necessity for taking agricultural land for <br />housing and industry. She felt the need for that land should <br />be used as agricultural and farm producing land. She suggested <br />the Ci~y Council should postpone action at this time, and <br />look at the larger implications of what they were doing. <br /> <br />Ms. Sydney Herbert, 2750 Onyx Street, spoke against the annex- <br />ation, indicating she felt there was an opportunity for housing <br />within the city limits, and it would not not be necessary to <br />annex this agricultural land into the city, that it is good <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />...... <br /> <br />2/28/7 7--10 <br /> <br />{fib <br />
