EUGENE CITY COUNCIL <br /> CITY COUNCIL CHAMBER <br /> October 29, 1980 <br /> 11 : 30 a. m . <br /> COUNCILORS PRESENT: Betty Smith, Scott Lieuallen, Eric Haws, Jack Delay, D. W. <br /> Hamel,. and Gretchen Miller. Councilors Brian Obie and <br /> Emily Schue were absent. <br /> Adjourned meeting of the City Council of the City of Eugene, Oregon, was called <br /> to order by His Honor Mayor Gus Keller. <br /> 1. ITEMS FROM MAYOR & COUNCIL, APPOINTMENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AGENDA ADJUSTMENTS <br /> A. Appointment <br /> Ms. Smith stated that Mr. Obie recommended Jonathan Bates, 3605 Kevington Drive, <br /> to fill the term of Joe Soderberg, which will expire at the end of this year. <br /> This appointment would be for three years on the Budget Committee, commencing in <br /> January 1981. <br /> Ms. Smith moved, seconded by Mr. Hamel, to appoint Jonathan Bates to the Budget <br /> Committee. Roll call vote; motion carried unanimously. <br /> e B. League of Oregon Cities Meeting <br /> Mayor Keller stated that the Legislative Committee of the League of Oregon Cities <br /> would be meeting on October 30 and 31. Any items which councilors would like to <br /> have addressed by this committee should be given to him or Ms. Smith. <br /> C. Report on Sister City Activities <br /> Mr. Henry welcomed Peggy Hoyt, Tom Hoyt, and Margaret Anderson who have just <br /> returned from Kakegawa, Japan, Eugene's Sister City. <br /> Ms. Hoyt distributed pictures and a schedule of the trip to Japan and discussed some <br /> of the activities and ceremonies which they attended. . She noted that many ideas <br /> ,were shared with them and expressed the hope that a Sister City pen-pal program <br /> and student exchange program would be formed. She noted she learned about <br /> trade, government, and their schools. Mr. Hoyt stated that the Sister City <br /> Program is alive and well. The group that visited Japan was treated like <br /> royalty and they learned a great deal from the culture. He noted a solid <br /> foundation between the two cities. He encouraged others to take advantage of <br /> this program and to learn from them and noted that it was his pleasure to <br /> represent the mayor, the council, and the City in Kakegawa. Mayor Keller noted <br /> that this is the third venture in this program.
