.

e

\e

M I NUT E S

Eugene City Council
City Council Chamber

June 10, 1981
11: 30 a.m.

COUNCILORS PRESENT: Betty Smith, Mark Lindberg, D. W. Hamel, Brian Obie, Eric
Haws, and Cynthia Wooten. Gretchen Miller.

ABSENT: Mayor Gus Keller and Councilor Emily Schue.

Adjourned meeting of the City Council of the City of Eugene, Oregon, was called
to order by Her Honor Acting Mayor Gretchen Miller.

I. ITEMS FROM MAYOR AND COUNCIL, APPOINTMENTS, ANNOUNCEMENTS, AGENDA
ADJUSTMENTS

A. Downtown/Performing Arts Center/Fifth Street District Shuttle

Mr. Lindberg stated that at the last City Council meeting, there was an exten-
sive discussion regarding the vacation of Willamette Street between 6th and
7th. A number of ideas have surfaced regarding promotion of the downtown
district and the success of that business area. One is the possibility of
implementing shuttle service between the mall, the Fifth Street District, and
the Performing Arts Center. He would like staff to review and bring back a
report on the options for implementing such a service and possible options for
funding this service.

B. Promotion of Downtown

Mr. Lindberg stated that there are a number of problems in the downtown area and
he feels they are due, in part, to an image problem. Staff could look at a
series of public service announcements or other activities to promote downtown
~development as downtown development is a high priority goal with the council.
He indicated that he would have to leave the meeting early today and asked if
the discussion on assessment policies could be held over~ Mr. Gleason stated
that it could either be held over or a brief staff report could be given with
individual briefings given to the councilors later if needed. The council
concurred that a brief staff report would be presented today. Ms. Miller
reiterated that she would like to see an additional report brought back at a
later time. Mr. Gleason indicated that this could be done.

MINUTES--Eugene City Council

June 10, 1981

Page 1
