<br />ECC <br />UGENE ITY OUNCIL <br />AIS <br />GENDA TEM UMMARY <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Adoption of Resolution 4893 Publicly Committing the City of Eugene to Sustainable <br />Practices and to Businesses that Produce Sustainable Products and Services <br /> <br />Meeting Date: November 13, 2006 Agenda Item Number: 3E <br />Department: City Manager’s Office Staff Contact: Mary Walston <br />www.eugene-or.gov Contact Telephone Number: 682-5406 <br /> <br /> <br />ISSUE STATEMENT <br />This resolution is being presented at the request of Mayor Piercy’s Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI). <br />This is the first step in accepting the 11 recommendations to the City of Eugene in its report which was <br />accepted by the City Council on October 23, 2006. <br /> <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br />In 2005, Mayor Piercy launched the SBI which was to develop recommendations for retaining, growing, <br />and creating sustainable businesses and jobs in the city of Eugene. The task force, composed of 16 <br />persons appointed by the Mayor, met over the course of 18 months and presented its report to the City <br />Council on September 25, 2006. Among the recommendations in the report was that the City Council <br />publicly commit to sustainable practices and to businesses that produce sustainable products and services. <br /> <br /> <br />RELATED CITY POLICIES <br />On February 28, 2000, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 4618, adopting a definition and <br />statement of intent regarding the application of sustainability principles to the City of Eugene, and <br />affirmed the commitment of City elected officials and staff to uphold these principles. To further this <br />commitment, the City Council adopted Resolutions No. 4884 and 4887 in the summer of 2006 regarding <br />a policy sustainable buildings policy for City-owned and occupied buildings. <br /> <br /> <br />COUNCIL OPTIONS <br />The City Council may adopt the proposed resolution, amend proposed resolution or reject the resolution. <br /> <br /> <br />CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION <br />The City Manager recommends adoption of the proposed resolution. <br /> <br /> <br />SUGGESTED MOTIONS <br /> <br />Move to adopt Resolution 4893 publicly committing the City of Eugene to sustainable practices and to <br /> <br />businesses that produce sustainable products and services. <br /> <br /> L:\CMO\2006 Council Agendas\M061113\S0611133E.DOC <br /> <br />
