Yes! I love the Whilamut Natural Area and have participated in events, run/walked on the trails, visited
the dog park with my puppy, and used the river access points to view the river. I enjoy the mixture of
uses within the park, and its proximity to the Eugene downtown.
1 Have you been a frequent visitor to the Whilamut Natural Area? What do you most enjoy about the park?
I can attend quarterly, and have time to assist with additional activities.
2 The Citizen Planning Committee (CPC) meets as a full committee on a quarterly basis and all members are
expected to attend. There are additional opportunities for involvement which include subcommittees which
focus on specific park issues and volunteer work parties in the park. Would you be able or willing to
participate in these additional activities?
I'm interested in the opportunity to see the Whilamut Natural Area as a connection space between
Springfield and Eugene communities, to see the retention of the natural area as the other side of the
river is developed, and to see vibrant use and community ownership of the space help to alleviate issues
related to camping and park misuse.
3 Describe your top three interest areas or issues regarding the Whilamut Natural Area of Alton Baker Park.
I am a generalist who has the ability to network, "friend-raise", fund raise, brainstorm, problem solve,
and action ideas. I have connections through the museum, UO, Chambers of Commerce, and 4J school
district.
4 The CPC works with the City of Eugene, Willamalane Park and Recreation District, and other organizations.
What specific strengths and attributes can you contribute to thre CPC?
I have lead teams, and participated in discussions that have brought wide ranging suggestions and
ideas. I have been a resource to people in the groups I have worked with - listening to fully understand
diverse perspectives, advocating for achievable initiatives, and insisting on respectful discussion, and
fair allocations of time. I believe that setting goals and guidelines before discussion is most helpful
when divergent opinions are expected.
5 Please cite an example in which a wide range of opinions surfaced within a group to which you belonged,
and your role in bringing divergent sides toward resolution.
Ruth Hyde
June 10, 2019, Meeting – Item 7
