The three most pressing human rights issues facing Eugene are homelessness, racism, and
discrimination. All three of these issues are compounded by the intersection of identity and race.
Discrimination is the most general of these issues, effecting the most people, and is generally the most
felt in a myriad of ways. Discrimination can also be the least visible effecting people through
employment practices and micro aggressions which can be hard to trace those responsible. Thus
cultural shifting is required to help mitigate discrimination through education, understanding, and
empathy there can be positive shifts which have direct and important impact on people’s livelihood.
3 What do you see as the three most pressing human rights issues in Eugene? Select the most important and
explain why.
I excel in big picture thinking, group dynamics, creative problem solving, and interpersonal
communication. These are the skills needed to negotiate with impassioned individuals who hold strong
morally based opinions. By getting to the root of our philosophies, understanding each others
backgrounds, and sharing in a common goal we can work together while still holding differing opinions.
Where I fall short are more technical organizational and time management skills that come with being an
adult with inattentive add. If you have ever worked creatively with a group of artists, you know then the
similarities, impassioned, strong willed, and opinionated, to say the least. I’ve worked on numerous
creative projects with very strong willed individuals and I’ve learned honed my ability to listen. I feel that
this is the most important skill one can have in a group dynamic, if you are listening to respond, playing
a social game of chess, then you are not listening to understand. By truly understanding and asking
questions instead of stating answers, we build the relationships necessary to build a framework of
advisory policy together.
4 Describe your specific strengths and weaknesses that would allow you to negotiate group situations in which
members hold strong, differing opinions. Give a specific example if possible.
Jam Allison
HRC - Round 1 Applications July 8, 2019, Meeting – Item 4
