1.3 Definitions <br />This plan focuses on soft-surface recreational <br />trails and related facilities in and around <br />Eugene, including a variety of trail types to <br />serve a wide range of user groups. Hard-surface <br />shared-use paths, an important element of the <br />City's bicycle and pedestrian system, are <br />planned for separately in the City's <br />Transportation System Plan and Bicycle and <br />Pedestrian Plan . <br />Spencer Butte main summit trail <br />Amazon Headwaters Trail <br />Eugene Trails Plan -2018 <br />Trails vs. Paths <br />Trails are soft-surfaced and primarily <br />for recreation use. <br />Paths are hard -surface and serve both a <br />recreational and transportation function. <br />This plan specifically addresses soft-surfaced, <br />non-motorized, recreational trails. <br />Pedestrian Trail <br />A soft-surface trail designated for <br />pedestrian use only (walking, <br />hiking, running). Bicycles are not <br />permitted on these trail <br />segments. Surfacing is typically <br />gravel. <br />Shared-Use Trail <br />A soft-surface trail that is shared <br />by pedestrians, runners, and <br />mountain bikers. Surfacing is <br />typically gravel. <br />Page 5
