This was accomplished by
closing a portion of Skinner Butte Loop, bringing in a chipper truck, tractor,
cable/pulley system, and other heavy equipment, and removing the Douglas firs and
invasive cherry trees that had significantly encroached on this stand of trees.
Douglas fir trunks were salvaged and will be stored for future trail or railing projects
on the butte.

"This was some tough work, done in tough conditions, but, with tree experts Mark
Watson, Steve Hespen and Dave Edwards and several Eugene Tree Foundation
volunteers, our joint efforts contributed to the successful completion of yet another
phase of the restoration project at Skinner Butte Park," says Troy Kreger, Volunteers
in Parks coordinator.

Saturday's work at Skinner Butte Park was made possible by Eugene Downtown
Rotary volunteers, who cleared undergrowth at a work party at the end of last year.
The effort of restoring native upland prairie habitat at the park is guided by the 2002 Skinner Butte Park comprehensive
plan. The park's plan calls for the restoration and long-term preservation of native upland prairie habitat that once
covered nearly all of Skinner Butte. A day
earlier, Maurie Denner filed his prospective petition for the City Council Ward 2 position. Scott Meisner
turned in his petitions and completed the filing process for City Council Ward 7 on February 9.

The City Recorder's Office has received fewer calls this week from people requesting information about
becoming a candidate, but inquiries about the names of candidates and where they are in the filing
process have increased. Callers are directed to the City's Elections website for the most current information.
www.ci.euqene.or, us/cityreco/Elections.
