MINUTES <br /> <br /> STATE OF THE CITY <br /> O'Neill/Williams Rooms--Eugene Conference Center <br /> <br /> January 12, 2000 <br /> 11:30 a.m. <br /> <br />I.WELCOME <br /> <br />Mayor James D. Torrey called the meeting of the City Council to order. <br /> <br />II.MUSIC <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey introduced the City Singers, who sang several selections of music. <br /> <br />II.INTRODUCTIONS <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey introduced the City Council and described each councilor's areas of interest and <br />accomplishments over the past year. In describing the accomplishments of Councilor Betty <br />Taylor, the Mayor called upon her to support him in an effort to establish a new sister city in <br />Mexico in recognition of the many members of the community from that country. <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey introduced Oregon's First Lady, Sharon Kitzhaber, and members of her family, as <br />well as his wife Kathy, daughter Tammy, son Todd, other elected local officials, school board <br />members, and members of the Youth Leadership Forum and their school principals. <br /> <br />IV. RECOGNITION AWARDS <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey presented Employee Recognition Awards to Randy Ellis of the Eugene Police <br />Department for his community outreach efforts; Sarah Medary of the Public Works Department's <br />Engineering Division for her work in City diversity efforts; and Tom Larson of the Public Works <br />Department's Transportation Division for managing the Ferry Street Bridge project. <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey said that March 2 was "Read Across America Day," in honor of Dr. Suess' birthday, <br />and encouraged those in attendance to take the opportunity to read for an hour to kindergarten or <br />first grade children. <br /> <br />Mayor Torrey presented Community Service Awards to Tony Reyneke for his volunteer efforts at <br />Gilham Elementary School, Regina Cox and Betty Austill of SMART (Start Making a Reader <br />Today), and Tama Davis, representing the OASIS Tutoring Program. <br /> <br />Ms. Kitzhaber presented a Community Service Award to Tori Luke and Courtney Bowman for <br />their advocacy of the STARZ (Students Today Aren't Ready for Sex) program.
