Appendix C: Community Profile <br />Geography and Climate <br />The Eugene -Springfield area is located in the south end of the Willamette Valley, at the <br />confluence of the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers, between the Coast Range and the <br />Cascade Mountains. The Eugene -Springfield area contains a diversity of landscapes: <br />wetlands, rivers, lakes, creeks, riparian areas, grasslands, uplands, and foothills. <br />In addition to the Willamette and McKenzie Rivers, there are numerous creeks and a <br />canal system running through the area as well as several large lakes and reservoirs <br />including Fern Ridge Reservoir. <br />The climate for the Eugene -Springfield area is moderate. The average range of high <br />temperature in January is 47 degrees while the average low is 34 degrees. In August, <br />the average high temperature is 83 degrees with an average low of 51 degrees. The <br />recorded annual range of daily temperatures is between 42 degrees and 64 degrees. <br />Each year the Eugene -Springfield area receives about 38 inches of precipitation.1 <br />Population and Demographics <br />Eugene and Springfield make up the largest cities in the Lane Metropolitan Planning <br />Organization (MPO) area. The estimated population of Eugene in 2018 was 169,695 <br />people which is a 20.7% increase since 2010. The annual growth rate is .99%. The <br />estimated population for Springfield in 2018 was 60,865, a 14.1% increase since 2010. <br />Springfield has an annual average growth rate of 1.52%. <br />Within the Lane MPO, key population and demographic trends include: <br />• 79.9% of the population identifies as white (non -Latino). <br />• 14.9% of the population identifies as minority. <br />• 8% of the population identifies as Latino, an 81% increase since 2000. <br />• Almost 90.5% of the population speaks only English. <br />• About 9.5% of the population speaks a language other than English at home, <br />mainly Spanish, Chinese, German, Japanese, and French. <br />• Nearly 16.5% of people living in the Lane MPO area have one or more <br />disability. <br />• In Eugene, 52% of all households are family households; and in Springfield <br />59% of all households are family households.
