Hazard Descriptions <br />14 miles down the North Fork Toutle River, and the lateral blast effects covered <br />230 square miles and devasted an area 19 miles from west to east of the crater. The <br />ash cloud spread across the United States in three days and circled the Earth in 15 <br />days. Major ash falls occurred as far away as central Montana, and ash fell visibly <br />as far asway as the Great Plains. A lahar eroded material from the North Fork <br />Toutle River, increasing in size as it travelled downstream destroying bridges and <br />homes.
