IV. Organizational Changes and Next Steps
This past year, the commission experienced the first major membership transition since its
inception. In anticipation of four known vacancies, a small group of commissioners reviewed
applications, met with candidates, and forwarded a recommendation to the Mayor for the
applicants who would help maintain a membership that is representative of our community and
would bring the pertinent skills to the position. Commissioner John Ahlen reapplied for a second
term and was unequivocally supported for continuing service. At the October meeting, out-
going commissioners Tracy Olsen, Tim Laue, and Floyd Prozanski were thanked for their
service. At the November meeting, newly appointed commissioners Joe Alsup, Tamara Miller,
and Charles Zennaché were welcomed to the group.
In addition to these at-large membership changes, Human Rights Commission member Neil Van
Steenbergen completed his term as liaison to the Police Commission and Hugh Massengill was
appointed to this position. In January, George Poling began his service as the second City
Council liaison, and Charles Hare was appointed to fill the remainder of the term vacated by
George Bennett. The five commissioners who will have completed two full terms of service
were honored at the Eugene Police Awards Ceremony in May and received Partnership Awards
with the following inscription:
As a foundingmember of the Eugene
Police Commission who has completed
two full terms of service, you have
dedicated countlesshours of yourpersonal
time to foster positiverelationships between
thepolice and the community.
