Both spots feature Cody, the official Fire Safety
Dalmatian, who represents Fire Prevention at no taxpayer cost. The
photo shows a sampling of novelty lighters from a local private collection.
These have been banned in some states and cities, and fire officials
would welcome further restrictions. Eugene's fire prevention TV spots
began airing this week on local stations and will continue to be broadcast
through mid-December. For more information, please contact Fire & EMS
Public Information Officer Glen Potter at 682-7118.

Recreation Events Kick Off Holiday Season
Recreation Services will hold two events in honor of Thanksgiving next week. The first, presented by the Senior
Program, is a Thanksgiving meal with turkey and all the trimmings that will be served at 11:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, November 26, at the Campbell Community Center. The center is expecting 150 people for this year’s
Thanksgiving meal. On the Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 29, Sheldon and Echo Hollow pools will help
residents undo their holiday overeating tradition with special “Turkey Burn” deep-water fitness classes from 9:30 –
10:30 a.m. Another annual event, the Senior Program’s Holiday Bazaar, was a great success last Saturday,
bringing in $4,450 on the first day of the sale. That’s almost $1,500 more than the first-day receipts from last year’s
event. The bazaar features items handcrafted by local seniors, and a silent auction and raffle of items donated by
local businesses. The bazaar has raised just over $6,050 for the Campbell Center’s Trust fund, which is used for
Senior Program services. For more information, contact Kathy Madison at 682-6342.

First Friday at Downtown Library
The Eugene Downtown Public Library will host an uplifting evening on First Friday, December 5, at 5:30 p.m. with
a concert of holiday music performed by HeartSong. Carolyn Larson, Karen Williamson, Beverly Gischel, and
Karen Meats have been blending their voices as a quartet for five years – and some of
them have been singing together for more than 15 years. At 6:30 p.m., author Bob Welch
will talk about his latest book, Pebble in the Water. Books for purchase and signing will be
provided courtesy of the University of Oregon Bookstore/Duck Store. Pebble in the Water
tells the story of researching, writing, and promoting American Nightingale, Welch’s
biography of a WWII nurse, which was named an Oregon Book Award finalist. From
jottings on a fast food napkin, through 26 rejections, to publication and national media
attention, the project grew into a four-year, rags-to-riches-to-rags journey that took Welch
to Boston, Ellis Island, France, and beyond. A popular Register-Guard columnist and

author of 11books, Welch has been honored with dozens of regional and national journalism awards. He is also an
adjunct professor of journalism at the University of Oregon, and the founder of the Beachside Writers Workshop in
Yachats.
