He averred that fear interfered with the ability to do what was necessary. He did not <br />believe the comrnunity was hilly inf(xmed on the ramifications of a potential disaster. such ns the <br />possibiiity of a Hash Hood caused by a dam giving way afler an earthquake. H.e asserted that the Army <br />Corps of Engineers (/\COE) refused to study the specifics on whether area dams would stand up shOUld an <br />earthquah~ occur or whether seismic retrofitting was needed. He submitted an article from The IY,:,v York <br />Times regarding tht; extensive American Indian legend documenting the last major emihquake in this <br />cycle. He caUed the <br />council's Neighborhood Initintive another "top-dovm process." He urged the council to scuttle the initial <br />process and start. anew with a group that consisted of an cqual number of neighborhood leaders and City <br />staff <br /> <br />Kathie Brown, 2224 Lillian Street, suppolted the adoption oftl:w "World's Greatest City of the Alis & <br />Outdoors" as the slogan f()r Eugenc, She noted the slogan was now being used by the Convention & <br />Visitors Ass(jci31i~)n of Lane County, Oregon (C\lALCO) in its visitor guides and Do\Vntowl1 Eugen~" Inc. <br />(DEI) on its banners, and had been referred to by Mayor Piercy jn her State oCthe City address. She <br />stated that the Hult Center for the Perfonning Arts was home to t.he Eugene BaBet Company, Eugene <br />Concert Choir, Eugene Opera, Oregon Bach Festival, Eugt~ne Symphony, Oregon Mozart Piayers, Oregon <br />Festival of American Music, and Willarnette Repertory Theater. She asked where else one could go and <br />ski all day and then attcnd a world class :uts event in the evening, She noted that Eugene was the <br />birthplace ofNike and every year it hosted the Prefontaine Classic. Sht' asserted that the (knvntown <br />"pulsated" with arts activities and she list.ed some of the smaller venues for perfo!111ing nndvisual arts. <br />She relat.ed that the Rolling Stone Afagazinc called the city of Eugene one of the best live music college <br />towns in America. She pointed out that Eugene had 105 parks and 250 rni les of bicyclc paths and one <br />could drive in any direction to go tly-fishing or snowboarding among many other activities. <br /> <br />Tom Jordan, 2110 Fairmount Boulevard, introduced himself as the Meet Director for thc Prefontaine <br />ClassJC track and Held event. \Vhile he believed that Eugene was the track capitol of Anwrica, he declared <br />that the city was more than H SpOliS oriented town. He suppotted the adoption of the slogan "Eugene ~ <br />World's Greatest City ofthe Arts & Outdoors." He urged the City Council to adopt this as Eugenc's <br />official slogan. He read the names of 29 community members into the record as being in support of <br />official adoption of the slogan and asked them to stand as he recited their names. <br /> <br />MINUTES... .
