These islands are necessary for pedesmans(which
includes cyclists walking their bikes) needing to cross River Avenue safely, especiaUy children
and the elderly.Traffic speeds are anticipated to increase with the additional lane being
added, making the road less safe for pedestrians.striped crosswalks provide very little
protection,if any. ,
I recommend that the River Avenue Project include Pedestrian Refuge Islands for the safety
of all citizens in the City of Eugene.

Additionally, projects like this are generally held to standards. The City Council overrode those
standards and made an exception for the River Avenue Project.Since the Council has chosen to
make an exception, the Bicycle Coalition is requesting to be notified when any project is going
to trigger one of these exceptions so that the Coalition has time to
review the project and insure that the exceptions do not prove
hazardous to bicycles.

Richard Hughes
Eugene Bicycle Coalition,member
PO Box 5506
Eugene,OR 97405
541-683-1409

Do You Yahoo!?
Tired of spam?
