-

ARC Application (cont.)
Stephen R. Smith

. As a professional auditor 1 am (:oIl(:erned with efficiency of effort, strength of
program elements, adequate planning and strategic preparation tor success of
processes and programs; as someone very concemed with issues around the
inequality of opportunity and access in non-dominant groups I want to assist
the process of opening up our society to much-needed rett)fm in education,
health care, fairness and equity, respect tor individual rights, and protection of
peopk who have been disenJranchised by the more powerful stakeholders in
our culture.
. More specifically, I want to learn more about the manner in \vruch the Human
Rights allies work and plan for irnprovements, and be a part of the efforts to
effect meaningful change in Eugene and the near environment. I do believe
that change happens locally and is only later transported to a ,vider arena, and
I bring a commitment to believing that local improvements in human rights
can be an effective begi11111ng to much broader change.
