Whal experience, training, and/or qualifications do you have for this partlcular board or
commission?

I have many years of experience teaching and writing about social problems and human
rights issues, including discrimination on the basis of race, class, g(mder, sexual orientation, and
slate of ablebodiedness. I have been an advocate on matters of social justice in both university
and community settings, and have participated in a variety of committt..'eS and groups concemed
with issues of diversity, social equity, and human lights.
Since settling in Eugene, I have bC'en a volunteer with and presently serve on the board of
Amigos Multicultural Services Center (fbrmerfy Amigos de los Sobrevivientes), a human rights
organization that assists immigrants, rdhgees, and asylum seekers. I am also a m(~mber of the
Eugene-Springfield Social Solidarity Network, reflecting my interest in worker rights.
In addition, I serve as a Human Rights Advocate for the City of Eugene Human Rights
Support System. I am now completing the city's Civilian Police Acadf.~my to better understand
the organizational context in which police misconduct sometimes arises, leading to human rights
complaints.
I am comfortable speaking about human rights issues in public settings. Recently I did a half-
hour interview on Channel 29 Community Television's "In the Publlc Interest" prob)fam on the
topic of D.S.welfare reform and economic human rights.

2. \Vhat specific contribution do you hope to make to the board or crmunission? Why do you want
to become a member?

J have a deep commitment to social justice and human rights, a couunitment which is reflected in
my past ,vork as a scholar and community activist. 1 am greatly enjoying the "hands on" experiences
offered by the local groups with which I am currently involvc>d. However, I also enjoy participating
at the policy advisory and public awareness-raising lcvds, and would like to add my knowledge and
skins to the formidable resources already available to the Human Rights Commission a') it pursues
such responsibilities.

lVOTE: To allotf., a large number C?f citizens to serve on board~ and commissions, the Ci(l! Council
policy allo'4's individual", to serve on only one standing board or commission at a time. A current
member (!! a boa.r&(?ommissiol1 who is a succes!J:ful applicant/or another b()ard~;ommissj()n 'will be
required to choose between the two appointments. This policy does not app~y to ad hoc committees
or departmental committees or positions that are desiWlatedfor members f1,~pecific advisory group
(e.g. the Human Rights Commission member assigned to the Police Commission).

CllT COLYClLPOLfcrlWu. -tRmSfi REA1'POlS1'JIE\T TO 8fHRDS AM) COJ1JUs"SlO.\R

,
,

JIc~ubers {~tcj(r {U.f1'i:so;:rg~rOf!ps.1Jlay' ,1erre a ruaJ't';-f!Unf i!ln.ro c:onseclf{h-e tel?llS1rfu'll the length q(fhe. fenii' is fhre(~real""i ("1(' {/lor('~,
Judindlla/s sf!ning tams less th{Ji! tilr.... rears lrilT be limited 10 a total (d'si:>: consecllfirf! yean q{sCI'rice.
l!wdea,}filleji.wapplh'irtiolfsji"lr{ inclImh"Jlls is the same as the deadliuejiw rwll' applications.
An !il-dividunt Hl({J' n:.~..q)p~r..t('i!' {!J>{!(;;nrnu'nr to il lfoard()r conuuissiOl1 {!!fe.r a! l<:~a.'}t a one year hiatHsjh:#u selTice.
("iI)' qlEtigl}l?e eniphn'(!!~s JJJal' O(!t serre (t(l ("iry ~~{E-"ugefic hor.:u"{ls or CG/Jullissiotls e.rci::'jlf as specNlcolf1" pr(Jride,J!J.1' tll;,;' (li(l."
