permanent and without a disconnect switch other than those re- <br />quired for over-current protection, Detectors may be battery <br />operated when installed in existing buildings, in buildings <br />without commercial power, ar in buildings which undergo alter- <br />ation, repair, etc., and when such work does not involve the <br />creation of additional units ar is a change of occupancy. <br />2. In Grou R Division 1 occu ancies every dwelling <br />unit within an apartment house, and every guest room designed <br />or used for sleeping purposes within a hotel or motel, shall <br />be equipped with an approved smoke detector. Detectors <br />within apartment dwelling units shall be mounted on ceilings <br />or walls in each unit at a point centrally located in the <br />corridor or other area with access to the rooms used for <br />sleeping purposes. ~n efficiency or studio apartments, and <br />within hotel and motel guest units, the detectors shall be <br />centrally located on the ceiling or wall. Detectors inside <br />dwelling units or sleeping rooms, if awall-mounted detector <br />is used, shall not be less than six inches or more than 12 <br />inches from the ceiling. Where dwelling units and sleepin <br />g <br />rooms are on an upper level, additional detectors shall be <br />placed at an accessi b1 e 1 ocati on as cl vse as practical to <br />the center of the ceiling directly above the stairways. The <br />owner of each hotel or motel, or designee, shall inspect and <br />service each detector every 12 months. A record shall be <br />maintained for each detector listing the date installed, dates <br />inspected, and dates serviced. This record shall be available <br />for inspection by the fire marshal . The building owner or designee shall post <br />written instructions for the operation of the smoke <br />detector within each dwelling unit, <br />b. The tenant of each dwelling unit shall be <br />responsible for periodically testing the unit's smoke <br />detector. The building owner or designee shall not be <br />responsible if a tenant removes a battery from a <br />detector. <br />c. Upon failure of the detector, the tenant shall <br />deliver a written notice of failure to the building <br />owner or designee. <br />d. The owner shall replace or repair the defective <br />detector within ten ~10~ days from the date of the <br />notice. <br />3. ~n Grou R, Division 3 occupancies every existing <br />dwelling that is being rented, leased, or is otherwise bein <br />occu red for c • g <br />p • ons ~ derat~ on, and each guest/sl eep~ ng roam ~ n <br />a lodging house, shall be equipped with an approved detector. <br />Detectors within qualifying buildings shall be mounted on <br />the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in each <br />corridor or area giving access to rooms used far sleeping <br />purposes. When actuated, the detector shall sound an alarm <br />audible in each sleeping room. The following shall apply to <br />such detectors: <br />a.
