toxic. When radioactive materials burn, the products of combustion
bother than lead} wi11 be radioactive as well.
Corrosives.
~. Acids. Examples: Formic, hydrochloric ~muriatic} greater
than I5%, hydrofluoric, nitric greater than fi%, perchloric, sulfuric
4% or more.
2. Bases alkalis . Examples: Hydroxides - ammonium greater than
10%, calcium, potassium greater than 1%, sodium greater than ~%; cer-
tain carbonates.
iodine, ammonia.
NOTE: Corrosives which are oxidizers, e.g., nitric acid, chlorine,
fluorine; or are compressed gases, e.g., ammonia, chlorine, fluorine•
or are water-reactive, e.g., concentrated sulfuric acid sodium h dro-
y
xide, are physical hazards in addition to being health hazards.
duce or are sus ect ~ ~ ~ ~ P
p ed of producing or ~nc~ting, cancer see def7ni-
tions, Article 9}. Examples: Asbestos, benzene, beryllium, carbon
tetrachloride,.chlorofarm, diazomethane, p-dioxane, ethylene dichlor-
ide, polychlorinated biphenyls PCBs}, vinyl chloride.
2. Tar et or an toxins. Substances which cause damage to parti-
cular organs ar systems see definitions, Article 9}.
~a} He~atoxins. Chemicals which cause liver damage. Examples:
Benzene, carbon tetrachloride, nitrosamines, styrene, toluene.
~ b} Ne~hrotoxi ns . Chemicals which produce kidney damage .
Examples: Arsenic, benzene, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, halo-
genated hydrocarbons ~e.g., carbon tetrachloride, chloroform},
lead, phenol, mercury, toluene, styrene, uranium.
~c} Neurotoxins. Chemicals which produce their primary toxic
effects on the nervous system. Examples: Acry1amide, carbon
disulfide, mercury.
~d} Blood or Hemato oistic S stem Toxins.
. ~ i } Chemicals which decrease hemoglobin function and
deprive the body tissues of oxygen, Examples: Carbon
monoxide, cyanides.
iii} Chemicals which damage the blood-forming organs.
