18813 <br />~1$} Section 10.321 is added to the Uniform <br />Fire Cade to read: <br />Sec. 10.321 - Fire Extin uishin S stem in <br />High Rise Stru tures <br />~uiri. un i <br />~a} Every structure five or more stories <br />or greater than 45 feet in height shall have <br />an approved automatic fire extinguishing <br />system installed throughout, including the <br />basement or cellar . The number of star ies or <br />height of the structure shall be measured from <br />the lowest level of fire department vehicle <br />access. <br />fib} The provisions of sub-section ~a} of <br />this section shall not apply to existing <br />structures other than Group R Occupancies <br />so long as: <br />1. The existing structure does not <br />constitute a life or safety hazard to its <br />occupants ; or <br />2. The existing structure is not <br />remodeled, in any single calendar year, <br />to the extent of more than 25 percent of <br />its market value immediately prior to <br />remodeling. <br />At such time as an existing structure <br />other than a Group R occupancy is deemed <br />to present a life or safety hazard to its <br />occupants or is remodeled to the extent <br />of more than 25 percent of its market <br />value, an approved automatic fire <br />extinguishing system shall be installed <br />throughout, including the basement or cellar. <br />~c} Existing Group R occupancies shall <br />comply with s~ub~-section ~ 1 } above except th a t <br />Group R occupancies in substantial compliance <br />with all present codes, and equipped with sma- <br />keproof towers, combination standpipes and <br />supervised fire alarms with manual pull sta~- <br />tions, upon recommendation of the fire marshal <br />and approval of the Structural Specialty Code <br />Board of Appeals, may be permitted to install <br />a less extensive sprinkling system, protecting <br />only the exit system of the building, in lieu <br />of the other requirements of this section. <br />The exit protection system must include auto- <br />matic sprinklers in all exit ways, an automa- <br />tic sprinkler head in each individual living <br />unit, and a nationally recognized testing <br />laboratory-approved battery or electrically <br />operated smoke detector in each living unit. <br />Sprinkler heads within living units shall be <br />located no closer than four ~4 } and no further <br />-~12- <br />
