<br />M I N U T E S <br /> <br /> <br />Eugene City Council <br />State of the City <br />Hult Center for the Performing Arts—One Eugene Center <br /> <br /> January 5, 2006 <br /> 5:30 p.m. <br /> <br />COUNCILORS PRESENT: Jennifer Solomon, Andrea Ortiz, David Kelly, Betty Taylor, Gary Papé, <br />Bonny Bettman, George Poling, Chris Pryor. <br /> <br /> <br />I. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS <br /> <br />City Council President George Poling called the meeting of the Eugene City Council to order and welcomed <br />those present to the annual State of the City event. He noted the many elected officials from other <br />jurisdictions in attendance. <br /> <br />Mr. Poling thanked City staff for being hard working and dedicated employees. <br /> <br />Mr. Poling recognized the contributions of the many people who volunteer for the City. <br /> <br />Mr. Poling thanked his wife Glenda for her support and recognized the birth of his newest constituent, a <br />granddaughter. <br /> <br /> <br />II. MUSICAL SELECTION <br /> <br />Those in attendance heard a musical selection from the Oregon Peace Choir, under the direction of Valerie <br />Rogers. <br /> <br />Mr. Poling introduced other members of the Eugene City Council. <br /> <br /> <br />III. CITY COUNCILOR REMARKS <br /> <br />Ms. Bettman thanked those present for their attendance and thanked the mayor for providing an opportunity <br />for councilors to speak. She thanked the many volunteers, including her colleagues on the council, who were <br />engaged in the community. She hoped more citizens would become involved in civic affairs and said one did <br />not need to be an expert to do so. Ms. Bettman said that people could educate themselves about topics that <br />interested them and become involved at many levels. She said the democratic process needed more <br />participants. <br /> <br />Ms. Bettman shared a quote from Aristotle: “If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be <br />found in democracy, they will be best be attained when all persons alike share in the government to the <br />utmost.” To reinforce that point, she also shared a quote from Franklin Delano Roosevelt: “. . .the only <br /> <br /> <br />MINUTES—Eugene City Council January 5, 2006 Page 1 <br /> State of the City <br /> <br />
