The market was
the brainchild of Aleta Miller, co-chair of the Active Bethel Citizens
(ABC) neighborhood group, who talked with Diane Sconce, a
Recreation programmer, about holding the market at Petersen Barn.
They agreed that a farmers’ market would be a good way to increase
the neighbors’ access to quality food as well as provide an
opportunity for community-building. Together, they made it happen.

The first Bethel Farmers’ Market was held in conjunction with the
Youth and Family Program’s Free Family Fun Night featuring a BBQ
dinner, tango and blues music and dancing. ABC and the City plan to
hold another Bethel Farmers’ Market on August 15 from 3:00 - 7:00
p.m. For more information, call Diane Sconce at 682-5521.

Community Climate and Energy Action Plan: Kickoff Event September 26
It’s increasingly clear that our national, state, and local community must take significant action to respond to
climate change. Early in 2009, following a recommendation from the Sustainability Commission, the Eugene City
Council committed to developing a Community Climate and Energy Action Plan by August 2010, to prepare for
climate change and reduce community-wide fossil fuel (oil, natural gas, coal) use by 50% by the year 2030. The
City of Eugene is now working
with a variety of community
partners to create a plan to
reach this ambitious goal.
Input from the community and
local experts is essential in
developing the plan.

On September 26, partners are hosting a kickoff event at North Eugene High School starting at 9:30 a.m. The
event will include small group discussions, interactive activities, and time to network and share information. The
goal is to engage the community in helping create and ultimately implement the Climate and Energy Action Plan.
The kickoff will be followed by public discussions on parts of the community that will be especially affected by

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
July 23, 2009
