In keeping with
the principles of the City’s Green Team, and pursuant to the City’s sustainability goals, training personnel in the
Fire & EMS Department now regularly collect shredded paper generated
in the City’s Archives section in the basement of the South Park Building.
Documents no longer required to be retained are shredded by Archives
personnel on a fairly large scale, to the tune of 15 to 30 large bags each
week. The bags used to be collected and taken to the landfill by building
maintenance personnel.

What does the Fire Department do with the shredded paper? Burn it, of
course. The material makes perfect kindling for training fires in the
nd
department’s concrete burn building on the drill field at 2 & Chambers.
There, probationary and veteran firefighters alike routinely build their fire
suppression skills in a controlled environment. In the past, the department
paid for shredded paper to start training fires, but that line item was a
victim of budget cuts, and Fire & EMS looked for other sources of kindling.
The idea of using the shred produced by Archives was generated during
discussions between fire training personnel and Green Team members, and Lynne Eichner-Kelley, sustainability
operations analyst in the City’s Facilities Division, was able to connect the parties in the new arrangement to make
the system work. Now, each week, firefighters collect the unwanted shred and transport it to the drill field, where it
takes its useful place in the instruction of Eugene’s firefighters.
