First, about two weeks before the big
night, the Fire Marshal’s Office sent reminder notices to proprietors, and included a fire safety checklist that club
managers could use to inspect their own premises. The checklist included such things as proper exit signage, door
hardware, egress requirements, fire sprinkler clearances, and other guidelines, both common-sense and technical.
Then, during the day and evening of December 31, deputy fire marshals and line fire crews visited each of the 19
establishments for a final inspection. Reports were positive from both fire officials and nightclub operators. The
inspectors found very few problems – mostly having to do with last-minute blockages of egress routes – and the
club owners were appreciative of the Fire Department’s efforts and secure in the knowledge that they had prepared
for a fire-safe New Year’s Eve celebration. The New Year’s Eve “sweeps” will continue as a regular service of the
Fire & EMS Department. For more information, please contact Deputy Fire Marshal Keith Haggas at 682-5261.

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 1
January 7, 2010
