ECC UGENE ITY OUNCIL AIS GENDA TEM UMMARY Appointment to Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission Meeting Date: January 25, 2010 Agenda Item Number: 2D Department: City Manager’s Office Staff Contact: Beth Forrest www.eugene-or.gov Contact Telephone Number: 682-5882 ISSUE STATEMENT This is an action item to appoint a Eugene representative to the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission (MWMC). BACKGROUND Interim appointments are made, when needed, to various boards, committees, and commissions outside the regular annual recruitment process. A vacancy on the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission will occur when Terry Gould’s term expires on January 31, 2010. A recruitment was begun on November 30 and closed on December 31. As a result, one application was submitted. The purpose of the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission is to act as the governing and policy-making body for regional wastewater management activities. Seven persons compose the commission, three of which represent the city of Eugene: one elected official and two citizen at-large members. The Mayor appoints the elected official and nominates the citizen representatives for three-year terms. The City Council then votes on the Mayor's citizen nominations. RELATED CITY POLICIES No policy issues are related directly to this action. COUNCIL OPTIONS The City Council can vote to approve the nominee. It can also request additional information or background on the applicant and delay the vote, or reject it entirely. CITY MANAGER’S RECOMMENDATION The City Manager recommends approval of the proposed nomination. SUGGESTED MOTION Move to appoint Walt Meyer to Position 2 on the Metropolitan Wastewater Management Commission, for a term beginning on February 1, 2010, and ending on January 31, 2013.
