<br />City of Eugene, Low Income Housing and Homelessness <br /> <br />FAST FACTS <br /> HOMELESSNESS <br />SHOULD BE ABLE TO AFFORD <br /> <br /> HOUSING AND STILL HAVE MONEY LEFT FOR BA <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Number of homeless individuals who sought social services in Lane County in 2008. There were <br />9,322 households who sought services. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Approximate number of individuals who actually receive emergency shelter or housing assistance in <br />Lane County annually. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Number of unduplicated homeless children enrolled in Lane County schools in 2008-09. Over half <br />(914) are from Eugene and an additional 464 are from Springfield. Lane County had a 7% increase <br />from 2007-08. Statewide there was a 14% increase and a 122% increase since 2002-03. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Number of unduplicated homeless and runaway youth seen by Looking Glass in 2008-09. <br />Statewide there was a 32% increase in unaccompanied youth from 2008 to 2009. <br /> <br /> <br />Number of homeless people on the streets or living in temporary shelters on January 28, 2009. <br />1,360 were in temporary shelters and 1,313 were unsheltered. 253 households with children were in <br />temporary shelter and 82 were unsheltered. 7% were Veterans. 48% identified themselves as <br />meeting the HUD definition of chronically homeless. Statewide the January homeless count <br />number jumped from 12,529 in 2008 to 17,122 in 2009 a 36.7% increase. <br /> <br /> <br />Percentage of local homeless households who receive services whose last permanent address was in <br />Lane County. <br /> <br /> <br />homeless for a year or more or 4 episodes of homelessness in the past 3 years and an <br />unaccompanied homeless person with a disabling condition.) This is based on the one-night count. <br />Nationally about 10% all homeless people have been reported as chronic. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Percentage of families who request emergency shelter who receive it during the same month as their <br />request. Each call <br />represents a person who becomes potentially displaced or homeless. Womenspace has 15 shelter <br />beds. <br /> <br /> <br />HIDDEN COSTS OF HOMELESSNESS <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Hospital emergency room services daily average cost per visit. (Peace Health). (2007) <br />The cost at McKenzie Willamette is approximately $300. <br /> <br /> <br />Johnson Unit Psychiatric Unit average daily shelter cost per bed.(2007) <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Buckley House detoxification daily average cost per bed. (3-4 days alcohol detox; 4-5 days heroin <br />detox) (2007) <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Lane County Jail average daily cost, including $134 for shelter, food, processing and transport and <br />$245 for the cost of arrest on warrant, jail book-in, and custody.
