Google intends to deliver Internet speeds of up to one gigabit per second, up to 100 times faster
than what most Americans have access to today. The system will use fiber-to-the-home technology to serve as a
test bed for “next generation” Internet services. Google states that the service will be competitively priced. The
company is accepting applications, via responding to a Request for Information (RFI), from communities with
populations of 50,000 to 500,000.

The RFI is due on March 26, 2010. The RFI covers a broad set of areas including community demographics,
terrain, regulatory issues, permitting, construction methods, current Internet providers, and community interest.
Eugene will be submitting an RFI response. In order to demonstrate community interest, the City of Eugene website
now has a page dedicated to this subject. From that page members of the community can learn more about the
Google proposal, take part in a poll and learn how to submit nominations on behalf of the community. These
“Community Nominations” will complement the official RFI response from the City. Go to http://www.eugene-
or.gov/googlefiber to access the Eugene Google RFI page.

Questions or comments about the Google RFI response should be directed to Information Services Director Randy
Kolb at 541-682-5070 or randy.c.kolb@ci.eugene.or.us.

EUGENE CITY COUNCIL NEWSLETTER PAGE 4
March 4, 2010
