For more information, contact Rayna <br />Luvert at 541-556-7082. <br /> <br />Earth Day Celebrated Around Town <br />An abundance of activities are taking place this week in honor of the nationally <br />recognized Earth Day on April 22. <br /> <br />This year’s Earth Day event at EWEB’s River Edge Plaza will take place from 11 <br />a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 24. The event will feature 40 educational <br />activity booths, John H. Baldwin Film and Lecture Series, musical main stage, <br />important community awards, Procession of All Species Parade, Fix-it Fair and <br />more. Mayor Kitty Piercy will be the opening speaker at 11:30 a.m. The <br />Stormwater Program and Green Building and Solid Waste Management Program <br />will share an educational booth space with a focus on durable goods and the <br />Canines for Clean Water program. The Transportation Planning Team will <br />provide materials including bicycle maps, safety information and a summer <br />events schedule to be distributed at the Point2Point booth. For more information <br />about the event, go to www.earthdayoregon.com. <br /> <br />In addition, the public is invited to shop for a cause on Earth Day at Passionflower Design in downtown Eugene. The <br />store will be open until 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 22, with 10 percent of proceeds from sales between 5 p.m. and closing <br />going to the Eugene Parks Foundation to fund the conversion of the closed wading pool at Washington Park into an eco- <br />friendly spray play water park. Also in parks, the Volunteers in Parks program will be working with 120 students from <br />Village School on their first annual Earth Day Action event. Students will be mulching, planting native shrubs, and <br />removing invasive species in the park around the Campbell Senior Center. Across town at the Guda-Kut natural area, a <br />dozen middle-school students from Lane County schools will be working with the City of Eugene Stream Team program <br />to mulch and weed the site on Earth Day. <br /> <br />For more information, contact Public Education Specialist Kathy Eva at 541-682-2739 or Kathy.a.eva@ci.eugene.or.us. <br /> <br />Art Contest Will Promote “Summer in the City” Events <br />The City of Eugene, Ethos Magazine, and Ninkasi Brewing are hosting a public art <br />competition to promote a vibrant, colorful downtown Eugene this summer. The winning <br />piece will be displayed throughout the summer on a 7-foot by 17-foot-tall banner on <br />the Parcade parking structure. The competition is open to all local artists. Artist’s <br />submissions should be in the spirit of the “Summer in the City — Downtown” event <br /> <br />series, which present family-friendly events downtown throughout the summer. <br /> <br />The art must be fun, colorful, and vibrant and may include, but is not limited to, <br />photography, digital designs, paintings, or illustrations. Judges will be looking for <br />originality, creativity, and works that suggest summer fun in downtown Eugene, <br />abstractly or otherwise. The temporary art could relate to/promote the Summer in the <br />City—Downtown event series, but should not be a literal event listing. <br /> <br />Submissions are due by May 7. Admission is free. <br /> <br />This family play day is inspired by the 2010 theme, "Things." The day will begin with readings by winners of the Young <br />Writers Association’s creative writing contest, followed by a light luncheon reception. At 1 p.m., acclaimed author Helen <br />Frost will lead a multi-age writing workshop.
