EUGENE CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY <br /> <br /> Work Session: Annual Meeting with the Human Rights Commission <br /> <br />Meeting Date: July 26, 2004 Agenda Item Number: B <br />Department: City Manager's Office Staff Contact: Greg Rikhoff <br />www. cl. eugene, or. us Contact Telephone Number: 682-5177 <br /> <br />AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY <br />This work session is the annual review of the Human Rights Commission, its work plan, and the work <br />plans of its standing committees. The commission will provide a brief update on its accomplishments <br />during FY03-04 and will highlight key work items for FY05. The commission also plans to identify <br />several emerging issues for discussion at the meeting. The City Council will be asked to review and <br />approve the work plan. <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />Council Action History <br />The City Council and the Human Rights Commission (HRC) hold an annual meeting to review the work <br />of the commission and discuss human rights issues in the community. The last meeting was held on <br />September 22, 2003. At that time, the City Council approved a 10-month work plan. The <br />commissioners are asking the council to consider the approval of a FY05 work plan that will carry the <br />commission through the remainder of the current fiscal year. <br /> <br />Council Goal <br />The Human Rights Commission is directed by the City Council and its goals of creating a safe <br />community where people feel secure and respected and of enhancing a local government that works <br />openly and respectfully with and for the community. <br /> <br />Policy Issues <br />There are no policy issues to consider at this time in reviewing the annual report. <br /> <br />Financial and/or Resource Considerations <br />There are no financial considerations in the review of this work plan. However, the hours contributed <br />by volunteers offer a sizeable resource to the City. <br /> <br />Other Background Information <br />The following are some of the highlights from the work of the Human Rights Commission in fiscal year <br />2004 and items to be continued by the Human Rights Commission members and the many community <br />volunteers. <br /> <br /> L:\CMO\2004 Council Agendas\M040726\S040726B.doc <br /> <br /> <br />
