Present CounciLu%en ]{ensill, Jolmson, l~{c~{urphey, Doff, Bell and Striker; absent Koppe and Bean. Chairman Hensill of the Police Committee reported that the Com,~aittee i~ad purcPzsed a desk for the Chief of Police and designated the hours of 8 to 9:30 o' clock A. !{. and 2 to 3 o'clock P. ~.4. as office hours when the Chief si%ould always H~-!. be formal at the City' '] Also stated that ti;e Chief of Police had an opportun.ity to retu~'n two deserters from tile Navy .to their strip at San Francisco with all expenees paid by the Gover~tuent, and moved that the Chief be mllowed leave of absence to ~:ake this 'trip. !,{orion seconded and carried. Ohalrman Bell of the Sewer Cmm~ittee reeom~.~.ended that the City allow to Jm~es Kermedy the balance of 95 per cent of tile contract price on tire second and third sections of tile Trunk 8ewer; the City l~o!ding back 5 per cent on these sections; the warrants to be dr~¥~l ~nd delivered upon ti~e execution of the contract between James Xm~nedy and the City satisfactory to the .~{ayor.. ~otion was r~de and seconded that the ~,eco~.~:~end~tion of the Co:~.ittee be adopted ~nd the ~yes and . nays were called. ~Cuuncllmen voti~-~ aye t{ensil!, Johnson, Hc~-~urpi~ey, Dorr, Bell and Striker, nay none, absent Koppe.and Bean. .Motion was declared carried and mo ordered. Chairman Striker of the Fire & ¥~{ater Committee reported favorably the peti- tions for street ].igh~s at 16tt~ and Hilyard Streets ~nd at 13tt~ and Onyx Streets, and same were ordered to be installed. 'Councilman Striker also reported tl~at some Chinese students occuPying the up-stairs of the Frasier Building at 6tl~ and Willamette Streets had started to put in a brick flue and t~ad been stop, ed by Build- i~g ~nspector Thomas.., Hr. Striker presented m written reco.~0m~endati0n of the Fire Water Co~;~.~ittee granting permission to make tile improvement. On motion, tt~e reco~endat{ on was adopted. Mr. Striker also stated that the fire department was in need of note fire hose. Chairman !~cHurphey of ti~e Street Co-mittee stated that practically all of the property m~xers o~ Alder Street were satisfied with ti~e bid of Clark & I{enery Construction 0o., and moved tt~at the contract for paving Alder Street from llth Awmue north to ti~e Millrace be ~varded to Clark & Itener~ Construction Co. in accord- ande with their bid ~nich was the only bid received for said work and that the Mayor and Recorder be auti~o~lzed to enter into a contract on behalf of the 0ity..
