18686 <br />H. Parks and Recreation Facilities Element <br />A parks and recreation program with sufficient diversity to meet the needs of <br />the citizenry is an essential ingredient t-o enhancing the livability of a <br />community. The Eugene - Springfield metropolitan area has a long history of <br />supporting parks and recreation programs, and this plan further strengthens <br />that commitment. The main types of parks and recreational facilities that <br />have been developed are: <br />1. Regional-Metropol itan Parks <br />Regional - metropo 1. i tan parks serve the entire metropolitan pop- <br />ulation as well as the surrounding population and provide a variety <br />of recreational opportunities including water areas, trails, picnic <br />areas, recreational facilities, and natural areas (e.g., Alton Baker <br />Park) . <br />2. Community Parks <br />Community parks serve surrounding metropolitan residents with a <br />variety of spec -i al i zed recreational. facilities and programs such <br />as swimming pools, tennis courts, and community centers (e.g., <br />Amazon Park and Iii l l aural ane Park), <br />3. Neighborhood Parks <br />Neighborhood parks serve the .various neighborhoods within the <br />metropolitan area. Neighborhood parks may include courts and <br />fields for active recreation. <br />4. Play Lots <br />Play lots serve residents of surrounding subdivisions and are <br />normally within walking distance of their users' homes <br />5. Community Centers <br />Community centers are usually located within community parks. <br />They emphasize recreational activities such as swimming, tennis, <br />art, music, etc, <br />6. Neighborhood Centers <br />Neighborhood centers, some of which are community schools, <br />emphasize social civic, and educational programs for young <br />people and adults. <br />7. special Recreational Facilities <br />Special recreational facilities include, for example, public and <br />private golf courses, tennis courts, and swimming pools. <br />rA <br />I I I -H --1 <br />
