For more information, contact <br />Mel Mann at 541-682-5318. <br /> <br />Summer Reading for All Ages: One World, Many Stories <br />This year’s Summer Reading theme at the Eugene Public Library is “One World, Many <br />Stories.” Children, teens, and adults can visit any Eugene Public Library location – <br />Downtown, Sheldon, or Bethel -- to sign up and pick up a calendar of free events. <br /> <br />At sign-up, kids and teens each get a free book to keep, courtesy of Friends of the <br />Library. Adults get a coupon for a free cup of coffee from Novella Cafe or $1.00 off a <br />purchase at Second Hand Prose Book Store, both located at the Downtown Library; <br />plus a colorful Library logo notepad and themed booklists. Adults and teens are also <br />invited to enter free raffles by writing reviews posted on the Library website. <br /> <br />Start summer off with smiles for the whole family at the Komedy 4da Kidz show. Laugh <br />it up with Angel Ocasio’s high-energy jokes and magic on Tuesday, June 21, at 11 <br />a.m. at Sheldon Community Center; Wednesday, June 22, at 4 p.m. at Petersen Barn <br />Community Center; or Thursday, June 23, at 1 and 3 p.m. at the Downtown Library. <br /> <br />Join in the fun at the Tom Question Show, featuring juggling, stilt-walking, and silliness on Friday, June 24, 1 and 3 <br />p.m. at the Downtown Library. Due to limited seating at Downtown Library shows, free tickets are available to pick up <br />starting 30 minutes ahead of the show. <br /> <br />Programs for teens will include free sci-fi and fantasy writing, hands-on crafts, a Harry Potter party, and more. For <br />adults, the Library will host a wide variety of author talks, workshops, and concerts. Special events include a talk by <br />Carl Hoffman, author of “The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World via Its Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains, <br />and Planes,” on July 21, and a Travel Writing workshop with Melissa Hart on August 4. <br /> <br />For more information, visit www.eugene-or.gov/library or call the Eugene Public Library at 541-682-5450. <br /> <br />Eugene Police Offer Summer Youth Programs <br />Summer is just around the corner, but there is still time to enroll in one of the exciting options offered this year by the <br />Police Activities League day camp and the Police Youth Academy. <br /> <br />Eugene Police Activities League (PAL) Camp: <br />Eugene Police offer an annual day camp for youth <br />between the ages of 8 and 13. This unique summer <br />camp is designed to offer opportunities for youth to <br />have a wide variety of new experiences, from <br />organized competitive sports and recreational <br />activities to arts, educational and social skill <br />development programs. In this incredible week of <br />action-packed fun for kids, police officers will mentor <br />youth and participate in games and activities. Middle <br />school, and older elementary-aged youth, will enjoy <br />summer activities and structured and personal <br />guidance in a safe, friendly environment. <br /> <br />PAL Camp will run June 20 – 24, from 8:00 a.m.– <br />2:30 p.m. each day, at the Arts & Technology <br />Academy (formerly Jefferson Middle School), 1650 <br />nd <br />West 22 Avenue. <br /> <br />Youth Academy: <br />Youth Academy participants will learn about a variety of assignments within the Police Department <br />such as the K-9 unit, SWAT, violent crimes, bomb squad, motorcycle traffic enforcement, and forensics, as well as <br />visit the 9-1-1 Center and the Juvenile Justice Center. Students will learn some defensive tactics and be given <br />instruction on emergency vehicle operation—and actually drive a police car on the Emergency Vehicle Operations <br />course (EVOC) for a full day. It’s a great week of learning and interactive fun. <br /> <br />The Youth Academy will be held July 11 – 15, running from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day. Eugene School District <br />students may be eligible for a quarter-hour course credit.
