7. DRUG INFORMATION <br />7.1 Cocaine <br />7.1.1 Classification <br />Stimulant. <br />7.1.2 Common or Street Name(s) <br />Coke, Snow, Blow, Toot, Flake, Crack, Rock <br />7.1.3 Description 1 Comments <br />A) Cocaine is an alkaloid found in the leaves of the coca shrub grown in South America, <br />B) Leaves are mixed with kerosene, sulfuric acid, and an alkali to form a coca base. <br />C) Can be processed further by addition of hydrochloric acid to provide the salt; cocaine <br />hydrochloride with purity of 90 —100%. <br />D) Looks like white flakes or rocks and feels powdery when crushed. <br />E) This powder is "cut" (other substances are added) before it's sold on street. <br />F) Can be used by snorting, injecting, swallowing, and/or smoking. <br />7.1.4 Effects on user <br />7.1.4.1 Phvsicaleffects on regular cocaine users <br />1) Insomnia — anxiety — irritability <br />2) Fatigue — depression — weight loss <br />3) Headaches — chest pains — nasal problems <br />7.1.4.2 Heavy cocaine use (chronic) <br />1) Experience hallucinations <br />2) High degree of paranoia <br />3) Paranoid psychosis, similar to schizophrenia <br />4) Death due to convulsion or cardiovascular and respiratory failure <br />7.1.4.3 Tolerance and dependence <br />1) Tolerance can develop from snorting, smoking, and intravenous injection <br />2) Strong psychological dependence takes place in many, but by no means all, users <br />City of Eugene Page 7 -1 DOTlFMCSA Drug & Alcohol Policy <br />September 2010 Information Packet <br />
