7.4.1 Classification <br />A) Sometimes referred to as narcotics; a group of drugs used medically to relieve pain, but <br />also have high potential for abuse; <br />B) Includes opium, morphine, heroin, and codeine; <br />C) Manufactured or synthesized opiates include meperidine (Demerol) <br />7.4.2 Common or Street Name(s) <br />Opium, morphine, codeine <br />Heroin: Smack, Horse, Junk <br />7.4.3 Description / Comments <br />A) Opium appears as dark brown chunks or as a powder and is usually smoked or eaten. <br />Often diluted or "cut" with other substance such as sugar or quinine. <br />B) Other opiates come in the form of capsules, tablets, syrups, solutions, and suppositories <br />7.4.4 Effects on user <br />A) Physical effects <br />1) Lethargic, not moving, day - dreaming, silly grin, vacant stare, pin -point pupils <br />2) Over time may develop infections of heart lining and valves, skin abscesses, and <br />congested lungs; <br />3) Unsterile solutions, syringes, and needles can cause illnesses such as liver disease, <br />tetanus, and serum hepatitis. <br />B) Tolerance and dependence <br />1) High physical and psychological dependence <br />2) Withdrawal symptoms: runny nose, teary eyes, reactive gastrointestinal disturbance. <br />C) Special dangers <br />1) Involved in illegal activities; <br />City of Eugene Page 7 -6 DOT/FMCSA Dmg & Alcohol Policy <br />September 2010 Information Packet <br />
