<br />Community members will celebrate the MLK Holiday in many ways next week. Free activities open to the public

<br /> Guest speaker , with music, dance troupes, cake and appetizers at the Eugene Hilton, Sunday, Jan.
<br />15, 5:00 - 7:30 p.m., sponsored by H.O.N.E.Y.

<br /> A march honoring the late , sponsored by the Eugene/Springfield NAACP, Monday, Jan.
<br />16, with 9 a.m. registration, and march at 10 a.m. The march starts at the Science Factory, 2300 Leo Harris
<br />Parkway, and heads to The Shedd, 868 High Street.

<br />Dr. Joseph White
<br /> , educator and author of several papers and books including “The Psychology of Blacks,” will be
<br />the keynote speaker Monday, Jan. 16, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m., at the University of Oregon, Erb Memorial Union. The
<br />event also features MLK Community Awards, an award by the Eugene Human Rights Commission to Patricia
<br />Cortez for her work with the Latino community: families and youth, the “All That” Dance Company, poetry and
<br />cake.
<br />
<br />MLK Day is best considered a day on (not a day off), as it provides service learning opportunities and a chance to be

<br />No-School-Day Fun at City Pools
<br />Recreation Services is offering kayaking and swimming fun for the no-school-day on
<br />Jan. 16.
<br />
<br />Individuals age 11 and older can take indoor whitewater-kayaking lessons from 1 - 3
<br />p.m. at Echo Hollow Pool & Fitness Center, 1655 Echo Hollow Road. Classes are for
<br />any experience level, from beginner to those who have taken a class and want to
<br />learn to roll, improve paddling, and a few other tricks. The cost is $25. Kayaks are
<br />provided.
<br />
<br />A no-school-day recreation swim will be held at Sheldon Pool, 2443 Willakenzie Road, from 1:40 - 3:40 p.m., on Jan. 16.
<br />The cost is $3 for youth ages 3 -17 years. For more information, call Rich Fay at 541-682-5525.

<br />Learn to Download eBooks and Audio Books with One-on-One Help at Library
<br />This month, the Eugene Public Library will hold its first “Library2Go: One-on-One Help” session. It’s a drop-in
<br />opportunity to learn how to download thousands of free eBooks, audio books, and videos from the Library.
<br />
<br />Drop in at the Downtown Library any time between 4 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18, to get individual assistance
<br />using Library2Go with an eReader, tablet, smartphone, or notebook computer. Bring a device to use to download from
<br />the Library’s website. Also, for those thinking about purchasing an eReader, a variety of brands will be available to
<br />test-drive.
