It sounds simple, yet in reality it is what will protect people from significant injury or
even death. Ground shaking during an earthquake is seldom the
cause of injury. Most earthquake-related injuries and deaths are
caused by collapsing walls and roofs, flying glass and falling objects.
It is extremely important for a person to move as little as possible to
reach a place of safety as most injuries occur when people try to
move during the shaking.

Look around now, before an earthquake. Identify safe places such as
under a sturdy piece of furniture or against an interior wall, and then,
when the shaking starts, the response can be quick. An immediate
response to move to the safe place can save lives.

Great Shakeout 2012 Statistics:
PARTICIPANTS NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS
Worldwide 19.4 million
Oregon 164,411

CITY OF EUGENE PERSONNEL 500
Central Services
Library, Recreation, and Cultural Services
Planning and Development
Public Works

For additional information, contact Stacy M.
