EUGENE CITY COUNCIL <br />AGENDA ITEM SUMMARY <br />Reappointments to Lane Workforce Partnership <br />Meeting Date: January 14, 2013 Agenda Item Number: 4E <br />Department: City Manager's Office Staff Contact: Beth Forrest <br />www.eugene -orgov Contact Telephone Number: 541 - 682 -5882 <br />ISSUE STATEMENT <br />This is an action item to appoint a member to the Lane Workforce Partnership (LWP) <br />BACKGROUND <br />The Workforce Investment Act of 1998 requires that local workforce investment boards, i.e., the <br />Lane Workforce Partnership Board of Directors, be comprised of a majority of members from <br />businesses. Business representation must be owners of businesses, chief executives, or operating <br />officers of business or employers with optimum policy- making or hiring authority; represent <br />businesses with employment opportunities that reflect the employment opportunities of the <br />local area, and are appointed from among individuals nominated by local business <br />organizations, such as the Eugene Chamber and business trade associations. <br />The Lane Workforce Partnership, formerly known as the Southern Willamette Private Industry <br />Council, is dedicated to assisting employers recruit and retain employees and to help individuals <br />find employment and to progress in their careers. <br />Current membership includes 15 members, including one elected official and seven business <br />representatives. The business representatives are recommended by the Eugene Area Chamber of <br />Commerce to the Mayor, who nominates candidates who are then confirmed by the City Council. <br />The term for this position will begin immediately upon appointment on January 14, 2013 and <br />will expire December 31, 2016. <br />RELATED CITY POLICIES <br />The boards, committees and commissions serve as advisory bodies to the City Council in the <br />development of various City policies. <br />COUNCIL OPTIONS <br />The City Council can vote to approve the nominee; request additional information or background <br />on the nominee and delay the vote, or reject the nominee and reopen the recruitment. <br />S: \CMO \2013 Council Agendas\M130ll4 \S130ll44E.doc <br />
