We formed two weeks
ago after listening to the testimony of several mothers whose
sons have drowned at these ponds. I was asked to co-chair
this group with Shauna Davis whose son and nephew both
drowned at the ponds last year. Also present was a mother
whose son drowned approximately 15 years ago. I find it
appalling that the city has seemingly done nothing to make
these ponds safer! There are no "No Swimming" signs, no
public education about the dangers of the extremely steep
sides under water, no vehicular access (until the end of this
summer), to let rescue workers in, no phones in the area... The
list is indeed much longer. In 3 meetings we have assembled
89 written ideas for this 'park' which many in the neighborhood
only know as 'the pits'. Many parents do not even know there
is water there. This is inexcusable and unconscionable.

co

4/1412006
