1>vb h L (0 'v \"r.-.
'-\h\)\Dlr

Brenda Hansen
979 Laurelhurst
Friends of Golden Gardens Park

And a grieving relative of John Emory who drown at the ponds in 1994.

I went out to these ponds for the first time this week. I can see the attraction. The setting
appeared to picturesque and very inviting, as I was sitting in my car looking out at the
area from the end of golden garden rd.

But looks can be deceiving. Because I know these ponds can and have been very
dangerous. I know these pond were originarug as gravel PITS. I know they have
claimed 4 young lives in the last 12 years ana as the population grows in this area there is
bound to be more ifnothing further is done to make them safer.

What I don't know is how many kids have drown in these ponds in total, I have heard
rumor that there may have been three others. Two being a brother and sister in the seventy
and a girl in the eighties I have not been able to locate the names and dates of these
drowning.

I know lane county owned these ponds until around 1974 when they were deeded to the
city of Eugene. There has been several discussions as to the future of these ponds. But
nothing has been done These pits have been left for decades to fill with water and for
nature to reclaim the area.

Under Eugene code, Chapter 6 section 6.010 Item (b),! an attractive nuisance is defined
as" An open pit, quarry, cistern or others excavation without safeguards or barriers to
prevent such places from being used by children." I feel these pond fit into that category
and will continue to until safeguards are made to make them safer.

This park land has potential, It could be a wonderful park-like setting were the bethel
community can enjoy and be proud of, Like all park projects there will be some monetary
cost.
sY'M.C\1~-\ f\~k~,^r .
Or it could be forgotten again and left ~ until th~ :W year n eMl b~ i mA~d
this too will have a cost, but it will be in the life's of more children. I for one find that
cost unacceptable. Please Don't forget this Park and the life's lost there. Let's do what
need to be done today for the children of tomorrow.

!...)
. J
