A Petition for the Renovation of the Alton Baker Canoe Canal Everyone loves pond scum, right? Probably not, or the canoe canal at Alton Baker Park would be in more use. The canal is fed by the Willamette at the west end of the park, and runs back into the Willamette near the duck ponds. When it was put in thirty years ago, it was meant to be used for leisure recreation, such as bird watching and canoeing. It may be used for those things now, but far less frequently, due to the decline it has come under. Green algae cover much of the surface, and ugly blackberry bushes intrude from the sides of the river. Coupled with the ugly concrete and five-foot shelves in the middle of the river, it isn't a very desirable, or even safe, place to be. This could all change however, if the canal were to be changed into a whitewater park with a focus on also helping out the local wildlife. The concrete would be ripped out and replaced with boulders which, while creating an excellent habitat for fish, would also channel the current to create waves and rapids which could be utilized by kayakers, surfers, body boarders inner tubers, and swimmers. This could also increase tourism and make it possible to have kayaking and river surfing competitions held here in Eugene.
