Firefighters Provide “Trees for Troops”
In true holiday spirit, off-duty firefighters from the Eugene Springfield Fire Department’s Station 2 volunteered their time
and efforts last week to provide trees to local military families. The firefighters cut, bailed and loaded 55 trees during
Friday’s snow storm. These trees were
donated by a local tree farm owner,
delivered to the Springfield Armory and
distributed to military families over the
weekend.
This is the second year that this event has
taken place, and it was again a huge success.
Eugene International Association of Fire
Fighters (IAFF) Local 851 is working with
the Springfield Armory to continue
providing trees to local military families who
might not be able to get a tree for the
holidays this year without this help.

“The Show Must Go On”
This well-known phrase in show business could not be more
appropriate for the performers, staff and patrons of the Hult
Center. Since the big freeze and snow storm arrived last Friday,
there have been no performance cancellations and the schedule
of events is robust.
This weekend, Eugene Symphony will be joined by Pink Martini
for songs and sounds of the holidays. Sunday afternoon, Eugene
Concert Choir will present the Holiday Pops Concert. Pre-
concert festivities in the lobby include the Oregon Tuba
Ensemble and a visit by Santa. In the Soreng Theater, the
weekend performances of Comedy Pet Theater and the
Nutcracker Remixed are sold out.
The holiday season is not complete without Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker ballet, this year performed by the Eugene Ballet
Company, Dec. 20 – 22. To wrap up the season in a nice bow, Eugene Opera opens with La Traviata on New Year’s Eve.

The Hult lobby will be twinkling and bright with holiday decor provided by Hult Center resident companies. Patrons who
park in the Hult Center garage may safely enter the building via the third-level bridge and then everyone can warm up with
a hot cocoa or a festive show drink from the Hult Cafe before the show.
While the weather outside is frightful, merry festivities are going on inside. To quote Irving Berlin: “There’s No Business
like Show Business.”

New Recreation Classes Encourage Activity and Creativity
Recreation is offering several new classes for winter and spring, including Fashion Design II, a sequel to the popular Fashion
Design, in which students ages 10 - 14 create their own clothes. In Sculpture, students, ages 6 – 10, create art while they build
fine motor skills and lateral thinking. A new martial arts class will divide students ages 3 to 15 by ability, and help them develop
self-control and discipline.
Three other new classes offered for the whole family are Second Sunday Square
Dancing, Family Fit Fun and Futbol Para Familias (Family Soccer). Women’s Self
Defense is a two-day workshop that teaches verbal, emotional, social and physical
responses for violence prevention and intervention for girls and women age 12 and
older.
Several new classes have intriguing titles. Mischievous Arts and Clandestine Crafts,
Balloonapalooza around the World, and Intermediate Mayhem for Beginners are all for 6
- 9-year-olds and are about creativity, science and releasing energy. If Rugby Were a
Dance and Fashion at a Glance, for 10 – 14-year-olds, explores the roles fashion, sports,
and dance play in this culture. Finding Your Inner Dragon, for those ages 10 – 15, taps
into the power of imagination as students embark on a journey of self-reflection and discovery.

Nochevieja/New Year’s Party for Families at Eugene Public Library
The Downtown Eugene Public Library will host a bilingual Nochevieja/New Year’s
celebration for families on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 2:30 p.m. The party will feature live music and
dance with Taller de Son Jarocho. Plus, join in hands-on, creative fun making cards and
piñatas with Jessica Zapata of Eugene Arte Latino.
The Downtown Library hosts a different free activity for kids and their adults every Sunday at
2:30. On Dec. 15, enjoy Stories of India told by Arun Toké of Skipping Stones Magazine. On
Dec. 22, it’s Game Time with Chris Wuebbles.
