Announcing Next Working City Episode - ACT:C Program

The next Working City episode, scheduled to run the first part of January 2014 on Comcast’s cable channel 21, will feature
the ACT: C program. Working City segments air on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings, as well as before the start of

each regular Eugene City Council meeting on Monday evenings.

who will do compression-only CPR until
Emergency Medical Technicians arrive. The
ACT: C program focuses on teaching

compression-only CPR. The program is a call to
action, hence ACT and C stand for Call, Check, and Compress. In this Working City episode, firefighter Josh Moore shows

how to perform compression-only CPR and shares that the Fire Department is collaboratively working with local partners
to increase awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and what the public can do to help in an emergency.

Dogsledding Excursion Inspires Writer
Recently a writer was so inspired by participating in one of the Recreation Division’s winter activities, she wrote an article
about it for Alaska Airlines’ in-flight magazine. The article by Melissa Hart that appears in the January 2014 edition of
Horizon is called, “A Life of Adventure” with the subtitle, “Dogsledding Brings
Insight to Outdoor Enthusiast.”
The “Mt. Bachelor Dogsled Tour” is one of many winter activities Eugene
Recreation offers for adults age 18 and older. Recreation also offers a variety of
outdoor activities for families and those over 50.
In the article, Hart explained that she has been a lifelong adventure-seeker, but
after turning 40 she wondered if her adrenalin-seeking days were over. Then, a
friend invited her to experience Eugene Recreation’s dogsledding activity. On
the bus ride over the pass, Hart noticed a 93-year-old participant which led her

to conclude that she would be enjoying adventures for many years to come.

Reading Readiness Training at Eugene Public Library
Early literacy programs are a high priority for the Eugene Public Library because “reading readiness” benefits individual
children, families, communities, and society as a whole. Each year, the Library hosts a free training on this topic for
childcare providers and other adults who work with local children.
This year’s workshop will be “STEAM for Storytimes” on Saturday, Jan. 25, at 1 p.m., at the
Downtown Eugene Public Library. Librarian Cynthia Olsen (shown) will demonstrate fun,
age-appropriate ideas for incorporating science, technology, engineering, and math into
storytimes and activities. She will also share tips for encouraging storytime interaction,
and information about resources available at the Library. Kellee Blanchard, author of
“Moving Joyfully,” will provide information about the crucial role that movement plays in
young children’s intellectual development – with audience participation!
